Newport has no padel venue of its own yet, but there are three covered courts six miles up the road in Cwmbran, Cardiff’s 20 courts are 12 miles west, and two projects could bring courts closer to home.

Is there padel in Newport?

No padel venue is open in Newport itself as of October 2026. The nearest courts are at the Welsh Padel Centre in Cwmbran, six miles north.

Two projects could change that. Slazenger Padel Clubs lists a Newport club on its official site, and a four-court venue has planning approval in Cwmcarn. Both are covered below, and neither has an opening date.

How far is padel from Newport?

Cwmbran is the closest venue at around nine minutes by car. Cardiff takes 20 to 25 minutes on the M4, and Bristol is a longer trip of around 30 miles.

Where to play: Cwmbran and Cardiff

The nearest padel to Newport is the Welsh Padel Centre in Cwmbran, around six miles north on the A4051 – nine minutes by car, or under 20 minutes by train from Newport station.

The centre opened in 2022 and has three covered courts at the Woodland Road Sports and Social Centre (NP44 2DZ). Booking runs through the club’s own system at welshpadel.com, and court booking is for members only. Annual membership is £80 (or £7 a month), with a quarterly option at £30 for 90 days. Court hire then costs £14 an hour early on weekdays, £18 off-peak and at weekends, and £28 on weekday evenings from 5:30pm. The club’s booking page says there is no guest fee at the moment, so as long as a member books, the other players do not have to be members. The same page also says visitors arranging a game through the club may pay a guest fee, so check before you turn up as a non-member.

Non-members can still get on court through the taster sessions and group coaching. Free loan rackets and on-site parking make it an easy first visit.

Beyond Cwmbran, Cardiff is about 12 miles west and has 20 padel courts across three venues: Smash Padel Llandaff Fields, Padium in Cardiff Bay, and Cardiff City House of Sport. Court hire runs from £26 per hour at House of Sport up to £60 per hour at Padium’s peak rate, and there is no membership requirement at any of the three.

If you are prepared to cross the border, Bristol has 33 padel courts across five venues, around 30 miles east. It offers a bigger pool of courts and session times, and the Severn crossings have been toll-free since 2018.

Getting started if you’re based in Newport

For most Newport players, Cwmbran is the practical choice. The short drive makes a weeknight session viable without the M4 commitment Cardiff requires.

The Welsh Padel Centre’s taster sessions are a sensible starting point. You turn up with nothing, borrow a racket, and play a short coached introduction before deciding whether membership is worth it. If you then play regularly, the £80 annual fee pays back quickly against peak-time court prices.

If you want more variety, Cardiff’s Playtomic listings open up matchmaking, and finding a fourth for a doubles game is much easier in a bigger city with higher court density.

Slazenger Padel Newport: what we know

Slazenger Padel Clubs lists a Newport club on its official clubs page, marked as coming soon. The listing describes 11 indoor courts at Seven Stiles Avenue, NP19 4TX, with a pro shop, coaching and a founder membership scheme.

That is all that is confirmed. There is no public opening date, no pricing, and we have not found a planning or construction update. Frasers Group, which owns Slazenger, has said it plans more than ten new Slazenger clubs during 2026, and independent trackers note that some openings will slip. Newport is an announcement for now, with no schedule behind it.

Is there padel in Cwmcarn?

No. Four courts have planning approval at Chapel Farm Industrial Estate, about 10 miles from Newport, but nothing is open or bookable yet.

Caerphilly County Borough Council approved the scheme in June 2026. The applicant, Oliver Mason, plans a wider sports and leisure hub in an empty industrial unit. The approval restricts the unit to padel use, limits opening hours to 6am–9:30pm on weekdays and 9am–4pm at weekends, and requires a noise assessment before opening. Coverage names no operator brand, price list or opening date. As of 5 October 2026 it remains a planning permission with no venue behind it.

Other options around Newport

Newport Tennis Centre at the International Sports Village (NP19 4RA) is a large multi-sport complex with indoor and outdoor tennis courts. It has no padel at the time of writing, and no confirmed plans.

Swansea is a longer drive at 50 miles, but it has 14 courts across two venues, including Jaxx Padel, Wales’ largest single padel centre at nine courts.

Finding a game

Your best moves from Newport right now:

  • Book Cwmbran direct via welshpadel.com – join as a member or start with a taster, and check the social session schedule first
  • Install Playtomic and search around a 20-mile radius – Cardiff sessions will come up, some with slots for newer players
  • Check the Welsh Padel Centre’s social media (@welshpadel on Instagram) for open days and new session announcements

Newport will get its own courts, and Slazenger’s 11-court plan is the most likely route. Until a date appears, Cwmbran is the local option and Cardiff is half an hour on the motorway.
