Padel has arrived in Wakefield. The scene is still small – one established pay-and-play venue, one club in the pipeline – but the sport is gaining ground across West Yorkshire at pace, and Wakefield players are well-placed to benefit from what’s already there and what’s coming. If you’re based in Wakefield and looking for courts, here’s the full picture.

One open venue. Four courts, pay-and-play, floodlit. Four more approved at Sandal RUFC. Leeds 20 minutes away for when you want more options.

Where to play padel in Wakefield

One venue is currently taking bookings in Wakefield itself.

Venue Location Courts Type Booking
Wakefield Sports & Social Club Eastmoor Road, Wakefield, WF1 3RR 4 Outdoor (floodlit) Playtomic

Wakefield Sports & Social Club has been operating padel courts since 2023 and is the main option in the city. Four floodlit outdoor courts sit directly outside the clubhouse on Eastmoor Road, open seven days a week from 8am to 10pm. No membership required – anyone can book via Playtomic. The club has a bar and café on site, free parking, and a beer garden for post-match drinks. It’s a traditional sports and social club that added padel to a mix that already included football pitches and other facilities, so the atmosphere is relaxed and community-focused – more social club than padel specialist.

Court hire is available for all levels. Wakefield Sports Club also runs padel programmes for juniors and intermediates – check their website or call 01924 365007 for current session times. For general Playtomic bookings, prices at outdoor courts in West Yorkshire tend to sit in the £20–£35/hr range depending on time.

What’s coming: Sandal RUFC

Wakefield’s padel provision is about to double. Sandal RUFC, the rugby union club on Standbridge Lane in the south of the city, received planning approval in May 2026 to build four padel courts on the field adjacent to its clubhouse. The plans were passed by Wakefield Council, making it one of the more recent examples of a UK rugby club diversifying into racket sports – a pattern that’s become common as padel’s commercial case becomes easier to make.

No opening date has been confirmed. Sandal RUFC is a well-established club with existing facilities and a bar, so when the courts open they’ll likely follow the same accessible, community-first model as Wakefield Sports Club. Worth following the club on social media if you want to know when bookings go live.

Nearby: Barnsley and Leeds

Wakefield sits between two growing padel cities – Leeds to the north, Barnsley to the south – and both are worth knowing about if you play regularly.

Barnsley Padel Club is around 20 minutes south of Wakefield. Located at 182 Pontefract Road, Cudworth, it currently has three floodlit courts with a fourth due to open in 2026. Court hire runs from around £22–£33/hr, with a membership discount available. Rackets and balls are included free with bookings. It’s a purpose-built padel venue – no multi-sport distraction – and the smaller scale keeps it accessible without the noise of a large commercial venue. Playtomic or Playskan for bookings.

Leeds is 20 minutes north and a different proposition entirely. The city has the largest indoor padel club in the UK – Slazenger Padel Leeds North in Seacroft, with 12 indoor courts – plus Optimum Padel (8 indoor courts, open March 2026), Pure Padel North Leeds, and two more venues in the pipeline before the end of 2026. If you want high-quality indoor padel, a big social scene, or courts available on short notice, Leeds is the answer. The padel in Leeds guide covers every venue in detail.
