Sunderland’s padel scene is compact but real. One venue. Eleven courts. And a schedule built around the kind of social sessions that have driven padel’s growth across the country.

True Padel Sunderland – the only dedicated venue
Eleven indoor courts on Wessington Way, with daily mix-ins, leagues, and an Intro to Padel programme for complete beginners.
True Padel Sunderland opened in January 2026 at Thomsen Retail Park on Wessington Way (SR5 3FR). The facility has 11 courts – a mix of doubles and singles configurations – all on crystal surfaces under cover. It sits in a retail park with free parking, which matters if you’re coming by car from across the city or the wider Wearside area.
Court hire is booked through Playtomic. Pricing splits into two tiers: £26 per hour during low-peak hours (Monday to Friday, 7am to 4pm) and £39 per hour at high-peak times (evenings and weekends). Racket hire is available at £2.50, so you can turn up empty-handed. Split four ways at off-peak rates, you’re paying under £7 per person per hour.
The venue runs a full social calendar – daily mix-in sessions, Thursday morning events, ladies nights, couples socials, and over-50s mornings. These are priced individually (roughly £11–£30 per person) and are aimed at players who want the structure of an organised session without committing to a league.
Intro to Padel coaching starts from £14 per person for a 60-minute session, rated for skill levels 0 to 1.5. It’s the most accessible entry point to the sport in Sunderland – no experience, no racket, and no club membership required.

What about leisure centres?
Sunderland’s council-run and managed leisure centres – including those operated through Everyone Active partnerships in the area – had not added padel courts as of spring 2026. This mirrors the national picture: padel is arriving at leisure centres across the UK, but the rollout is uneven, and large managed estate operators typically lag behind dedicated padel operators by 12–18 months.
If padel courts do arrive at a Sunderland leisure centre, the most likely first mover would be one of the larger sites in the SR3–SR4 area. For now, True Padel is the only game in town.
Wider North East options
Sunderland is well placed for the broader North East padel network. If you can’t get a slot locally or want to play at a different venue, there are three options worth knowing about.
True Padel Durham at New Ferens Park (DH1 1HP) is the region’s original dedicated padel venue, opened in January 2024. Nine courts, the same mix-in and league calendar as Sunderland, and about 15 miles south. It’s where the North East padel scene effectively started.
Pikup Padel Gateshead is opening at Follingsby Park in summer 2026 – an 11-court, 33,400 sq ft venue just off the A194(M) near the Tyne Tunnel. Its motorway-adjacent location makes it accessible from Sunderland in under 20 minutes. This will be the largest standalone padel facility in the region.
For the full picture of venues, opening timelines, and what’s confirmed for 2026, the Newcastle padel guide covers the region in detail – including Project Padel, Pure Padel Gosforth, and the University of Northumbria club.
Getting started
Padel is a doubles sport played in a glass-walled court smaller than a tennis court. The walls are in play, rallies are long, and the underarm serve means you don’t need an overhead smash to start a point. Most people find it easier to pick up than tennis – you’re in a rally within minutes of picking up a racket.
True Padel Sunderland’s Intro to Padel sessions are structured specifically for this. Book through Playtomic, bring comfortable trainers, and expect to play with three other beginners in a coached format.
If you’re weighing up whether to commit to a club or keep it casual, the guide to choosing a padel club walks through what to look for at different stages.
