Reading is not a place that usually gets overlooked for sport. It has the infrastructure, the commuter base, and the appetite. Padel has arrived here, and the scene is growing.

This is a practical guide to where to play padel in Reading and the wider Thames Valley – the venues open now, the options within 25 minutes if you want more choice, and what to expect as a player new to the area.

PADELHUB Reading (RG1)

The flagship venue for padel in Reading is PADELHUB RG1, located close to the town centre. Five indoor courts, all year-round, with a full programme of social sessions, coaching, and competitions alongside standard court hire.

For anyone booking Playtomic, this is the venue you’ll find most consistently busy. The central location and covered courts mean the schedule holds whatever the weather – which matters more than it should in a British spring.

Located in Sonning, east of Reading, PadelStars operates one outdoor court at Berkshire County Sports Club. The club is a multi-sport venue covering tennis, squash, football, cricket, rugby, and hockey – padel is the newest addition.

One court is operational now, and the club is applying for planning permission for three covered courts. That expansion would make Sonning a substantial padel hub for east Reading if it is approved.

The Atrium Health Club

The Atrium in west Reading offers five outdoor panoramic padel courts alongside a full health club. Courts are booked via Playtomic. Membership tiers vary widely – from a £19 per month (or £150 a year) padel-only option up to full platinum packages.

Padel-only members pay £6.75 per person off-peak and £9 at peak times, which makes it one of the more accessible entry points in the area. Courts open at 6am and close at 10pm on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday, and 11:30pm on the other days.

What’s in the pipeline for Reading

The Thames Valley padel scene is still building. Key developments to watch:

  • PadelStars Sonning expansion – a planning application for three covered courts is in progress. Once approved, this would become a substantial facility close to central Reading.
  • Windsor Leisure Centre – plans for a new padel facility at Windsor Leisure Centre are progressing through the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead’s planning process, with a decision expected in 2026.

Players in the western part of the Thames Valley also have the option of padel in Oxford, 30 minutes by road – Smash Padel Oxford and North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club cover the city, with Smash Padel Bicester adding five courts as a midpoint between the two cities.

How to get started

If you’re new to padel in Reading, the easiest route is booking an open match on Playtomic at PADELHUB RG1. You’ll be matched with three other players at a similar level, and you can ask about racket hire when you book.

For something more social, check whether your local venue has an Americano session running – these rotating format events are how most new players find a regular group quickly. For more on how Americanos work, the complete Americano guide covers everything.

If you want structured coaching from the beginning, PADELHUB Reading and The Atrium both list beginner classes in Playtomic.

For context on how the UK padel scene got here so quickly – 1,825 courts across 551 venues by May 2026, according to the LTA – the piece on how UK padel courts get built explains the mechanics.

Bring trainers, and check racket hire when you book.
