If you’ve been waiting for Ipswich to catch up with the rest of England on padel, the wait is mostly over. The town now has two pay-and-play venues, a third on the outskirts, and a significant expansion in motion. Suffolk isn’t leading the charge – neighbouring Essex has a much denser court network – but the provision in Ipswich itself is more than functional, and it’s growing.

Here’s where you can book a court today.

The venues: a quick summary

All three are within or just outside the town. The Warehouse is the most accessible for a first session – fully indoor, open 6am to 11pm, and no membership required.

The Warehouse @ Ipswich

Four indoor courts on White House Road (IP1 5LT), inside a converted warehouse in north-west Ipswich. There are also two singles courts and two pickleball courts, and play goes ahead whatever the weather outside.

Booking is via MATCHi: search for “The Warehouse @ Ipswich”, book a slot, and you’ll receive a door code. Courts are bookable from 6am to 11pm every day. There’s free parking on site and rackets and balls are provided if you need them. A court works out at about £32 per hour – four players splitting that is £8 each, which is about as good as it gets for indoor padel in East Anglia.

The club runs a beginners’ group session on Thursday evenings (£12 each), and private coaching is available. If you’re new and want a structured introduction before diving into casual play, this is worth booking into.

Ipswich Sports Club

Ipswich Sports Club on Henley Road (IP1 4NJ) currently has one outdoor padel court alongside its tennis and fitness facilities. It’s a pay-and-play setup bookable through MATCHi, and members can book further ahead (up to 14 days, against 7 for non-members).

The more important news is what’s coming. The club is building four new padel courts – three under a canopy and one open-air – after planning permission was granted on appeal in August 2026. Groundwork started in late summer 2026 and the club has not given an opening date. Once they open, Ipswich Sports Club will have gone from a single outdoor court to one of the better facilities in the East of England – three covered courts plus a fourth outdoor, all on-site at a well-equipped sports club with a sports bar and coaching programme.

Worth checking the club’s website directly to confirm current availability.

Utopia Padel, Copdock

Two outdoor courts at the Copdock & Washbrook Tennis & Badminton Club on Old London Road (IP8 3JN), just off the A12/A14 junction south of Ipswich. Courts book via MATCHi, with a café and licensed bar on site.

Utopia has built a strong social programme – box leagues, regular social sessions, and three coaches available for lessons. It’s a well-run club with a strong community feel. A good option whether you want a casual court hire or a structured programme to improve quickly.

The bigger picture: Suffolk vs Essex

It’s worth being clear about where Ipswich sits in the regional padel landscape.

Essex, just across the Stour to the south, has built one of the densest court networks outside London. Padel in Essex covers the full picture, but the short version is: Rocket Padel Ilford alone has 12 indoor courts, and there are substantial venues in Chelmsford, Colchester, and Waltham Abbey. Padel in Colchester specifically – just 30 minutes from Ipswich – gives you three distinct facilities at different price points, including Padel United’s five outdoor courts from £12/hr.

Suffolk hasn’t matched that pace. The county’s padel growth has been slower, partly because it lacks the commuter-belt density that drove Essex’s expansion. But the trajectory in Ipswich is upward: two functional venues now, and a major Sports Club expansion under construction. Within a year or so, Ipswich should have meaningfully more courts than it does today.

Elsewhere in Suffolk, there are newer courts at Clopton, near Woodbridge, and outside Southwold – the county’s network is expanding beyond its main town faster than most people realise.

Padel in Bury St Edmunds

If you’re in west Suffolk or willing to travel 30–40 minutes, Bury St Edmunds has two options worth knowing about.

Risbygate Sports Club on Westley Road (IP33 3RR) brought padel to Bury St Edmunds in September 2023. Two floodlit outdoor courts, a community café, and an active coaching programme. Non-member court hire runs to £40 for 90 minutes; members pay £20. The club also runs Americano social sessions – a good way to find partners if you’re new to the area.

David Lloyd Bury St Edmunds on Sandlands Drive (IP32 6JD) has outdoor padel courts. Padel is included for Platinum members, so it is not a pay-and-play option. The facility is new and well-equipped.

What to expect right now

For a casual player based in Ipswich, The Warehouse is where most people will start. The indoor courts, transparent booking, and provided equipment remove all friction. Ipswich Sports Club is the outdoor option if weather isn’t a concern, with a more traditional sports club feel.

When the Sports Club expansion opens, it will change the calculation – three covered courts at a well-run multi-sport facility is a strong proposition for regular players. Keep an eye on that.

Suffolk is behind Essex on padel provision, but Ipswich is now past the “nowhere to play” stage. The infrastructure is arriving.
