Essex is a large county with a padel scene that has developed unevenly – strong in the west, where London’s expansion has pushed venues out past the M25, and patchier further east and south. But the coverage has improved considerably since 2024, and most Essex players now have a reasonable option within 20–30 minutes.

This guide maps the county by area so you can find your nearest option without working through five different booking platforms.

West Essex – Ilford, Waltham Abbey, Romford

The western edge of Essex, just outside the M25, has the county’s highest concentration of courts and its best large venues.

Rocket Padel Ilford (2 The Drive, Ilford, IG1 3PS) is the standout venue in this part of Essex. Twelve indoor panoramic courts, including two centre courts used for tournaments, plus a bistro bar, pro shop, and spectator zones. It sits on the IG1/London border and is a 10-minute walk from Redbridge Station. Court hire typically runs £40–£56 per hour; book via Padel Mates.

Padel District Waltham Abbey has six outdoor floodlit courts at the Epping Forest end of the county. At £20–£24 per hour via Playtomic, it’s one of the more affordable options in west Essex, and the club runs regular social sessions. Racket rental and free parking on site.

Padel 4 Everyone in Romford (RM3 9DJ) adds outdoor court access in the north-west of the county, and Powerleague Romford (RM7 7AY) has courts alongside its broader sports facility. Worth checking both on Playtomic if you’re in that area.

Central Essex – Chelmsford

Chelmsford is the county town and has become one of the best-served padel towns in Essex, with a new indoor venue that’s changed the picture in 2026. Chelmsford has its own dedicated guide on this site – padel in Chelmsford covers the full breakdown, including the new Beaulieu Padel venue and a price comparison across the town’s clubs.

Padel United Great Baddow (CM2 9RL) has two outdoor floodlit courts just south of Chelmsford – a good option for casual play at lower cost, from £5 per person at weekends. Also in the Chelmsford area: Padel United Chelmsford on the CM2 postcode with further outdoor courts, and Beaulieu Padel, a new six-court indoor venue at the Falcon Bowling & Social Club with a 13-metre roof height and café/pro shop facilities.

For something a bit different, The Notleys Golf Club in Braintree (CM8 1ST) has added padel alongside its golf facilities – one of several golf clubs across Essex to have made this move.

North Essex – Colchester and Feering

Colchester has its own dedicated guide on this site – padel in Colchester covers the three main venues in detail, including Padel United Colchester’s five outdoor courts on Eudo Road and the indoor courts at Prested Hall in Feering.

Padel United Colchester (CO2 7XE) has five outdoor courts bookable via Playtomic from around £12–18 per hour. David Lloyd Colchester (CO4 6AT) has two outdoor courts for members.

Prested Padel in Feering is the more premium option in north Essex – indoor facilities with a club membership model. It runs coaching programmes and club tournaments. Worth contacting them directly if you’re looking for regular structured play rather than casual booking.

The Essex Golf and Country Club at Earls Colne (CO6 2NS) has four indoor courts and sits midway between Colchester and Braintree – useful if you’re in that stretch of the county.

South Essex – Brentwood, Basildon, Southend

Brentwood Padel Club (CM14 5HN) has six outdoor courts and a bar area. It runs social sessions and leagues, making it one of the better clubs in the south of the county for meeting other players.

The Heron Padel Club in Herongate near Brentwood has three panoramic courts – two covered and all floodlit. The covered element makes it a better all-weather option than most outdoor Essex venues.

PadelStars Basildon (SS14 3GR) covers Basildon and the south-west of the county with outdoor courts, as does Club Kingswood in Basildon (SS16 5JP).

Garons Padel 4 All is located inside the Southend Leisure and Tennis Complex on Eastern Avenue (SS2 4FA) – three covered courts and one open-air panoramic show court. The covered courts make it one of the south Essex options that works year-round. Book via Playtomic.

Maldon

Padel United Maldon (CM9 5UR) has one outdoor court and three indoor courts – one of the few fully indoor options outside of the major urban areas. Four courts total, bookable via Playtomic.

Booking tips for Essex

Most Essex venues use Playtomic or Padel Mates for court bookings. Downloading both apps is the simplest way to check availability across the county. Several venues also list on Playskan, which lets you compare multiple clubs side by side.

If you’re playing somewhere new to you, the how to choose a padel club guide covers what to look for when visiting a club for the first time. And if you’re newer to the sport, the how to start playing padel guide gives you everything you need to know before you book your first session.

Gaps worth knowing about

Provision in the middle of the county – Witham, Maldon aside, Braintree, parts of Chelmsford’s eastern reaches – is thinner than in the west. If you’re based there, Chelmsford or Colchester venues are your most realistic options without a significant drive. The golf club conversions (Notleys, and others in the pipeline) are gradually filling these gaps, but it’s slower going than the urban areas.

Overall, Essex’s padel scene has enough depth in 2026 that most players in the county can find a court within a reasonable distance. The challenge is knowing where to look. If you’re near the north-west boundary with Hertfordshire, the Hertfordshire padel guide covers St Albans, Hitchin, Potters Bar, and Watford – which may be closer than some Essex options depending on where you are.
